Background of the Study
Gender-sensitive electoral laws are essential in ensuring that women have equal access to political participation and representation in government (Ahmad & Muhammad, 2023). In Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State, the effectiveness of such laws in promoting women’s political participation has been a subject of growing interest, as the region continues to experience gender imbalances in political leadership (Bello & Sulaimon, 2024). These laws are designed to address various barriers that women face, such as discrimination, violence, and lack of access to resources, enabling them to run for office and participate in elections on equal footing with men (Garba & Usman, 2025). This study evaluates the effectiveness of gender-sensitive electoral laws in Kano Municipal, assessing their impact on women’s participation in elections and political leadership.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although gender-sensitive electoral laws exist in Kano Municipal, women’s participation in politics remains low, with limited representation in local government offices and political decision-making bodies (Hassan & Nasir, 2023). The lack of proper implementation, enforcement, and awareness of these laws may be contributing to the continued underrepresentation of women in political roles (Ahmed & Ibrahim, 2024). This study will assess the effectiveness of gender-sensitive electoral laws in increasing women’s political participation in Kano Municipal.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the effectiveness of gender-sensitive electoral laws in promoting women’s political participation in Kano Municipal.

  • To evaluate the level of awareness and understanding of gender-sensitive electoral laws among women in Kano Municipal.

  • To identify the challenges faced in the implementation of these laws and their impact on women’s political leadership.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How effective are gender-sensitive electoral laws in promoting women’s political participation in Kano Municipal?

  • To what extent are women aware of gender-sensitive electoral laws in Kano Municipal?

  • What challenges hinder the full implementation of gender-sensitive electoral laws in Kano Municipal?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Gender-sensitive electoral laws have a positive effect on women’s political participation in Kano Municipal.

  • Women in Kano Municipal are not fully aware of gender-sensitive electoral laws.

  • The implementation of gender-sensitive electoral laws faces significant challenges in Kano Municipal.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the effectiveness of gender-sensitive electoral laws and their role in promoting women’s political participation. The findings will inform policymakers, electoral bodies, and gender advocates on how to improve the implementation and impact of such laws in promoting gender equality in Kano Municipal.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the impact of gender-sensitive electoral laws in Kano Municipal Local Government Area. The limitations include potential challenges in accessing comprehensive data on electoral law implementation and possible biases in the perceptions of women regarding the effectiveness of these laws.
