Background of the Study
Gender-sensitive electoral laws are essential in ensuring that women have equal access to political participation and representation in government (Ahmad & Muhammad, 2023). In Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State, the effectiveness of such laws in promoting women’s political participation has been a subject of growing interest, as the region continues to experience gender imbalances in political leadership (Bello & Sulaimon, 2024). These laws are designed to address various barriers that women face, such as discrimination, violence, and lack of access to resources, enabling them to run for office and participate in elections on equal footing with men (Garba & Usman, 2025). This study evaluates the effectiveness of gender-sensitive electoral laws in Kano Municipal, assessing their impact on women’s participation in elections and political leadership.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although gender-sensitive electoral laws exist in Kano Municipal, women’s participation in politics remains low, with limited representation in local government offices and political decision-making bodies (Hassan & Nasir, 2023). The lack of proper implementation, enforcement, and awareness of these laws may be contributing to the continued underrepresentation of women in political roles (Ahmed & Ibrahim, 2024). This study will assess the effectiveness of gender-sensitive electoral laws in increasing women’s political participation in Kano Municipal.
